Definition

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder of the bowel.  A diagnosis is made when all other possible and more serious causes of bowel symptoms are ruled out by a medical physician.

Symptoms include abdominal pain/discomfort; or a change in bowel habit to constipation, diarrhoea or both; abdominal bloating.  Blood is not a symptom of IBS and should be investigated immediately.

IBS can often be classified as 'diarrhoea predominant', 'constipation predominant' or alternating.

Prevalence

Prevalence of IBS in the general population is estimated to be around 10 - 20%.  It is twice as common in women as in men.

IBS is thought to most often affect people between the ages of 20 and 30 years, but can affect people of any age.
